Annealed Glass

Annealed glass is essentially “regular” glass. If you break an old single glaze window in your home, chances are it is annealed glass. This type of glass can typically be cut down or have holes drilled into an existing piece. Annealed glass is a good choice for the following applications:

  • Single pane replacement for residential windows
  • Shelving that will not be required to hold a substantial amount of weight
  • Table tops that are being used strictly to protect the surface (bed side tables, dining room tables, desks, etc.).

Tempered Glass

tempered glass

Tempered glass is a type of safety glass. The easiest way to determine if a piece of glass is tempered is if it has a stamp indicating that the piece is tempered. If the stamp is not there, the other way to determine would be if it completely shattered when it broke. Tempered glass is put through a heat-treatment process which will cause it to shatter to avoid sharp edges when broken. After it is put through this process, the glass cannot be cut down or drilled – it will shatter if this is attempted. Tempered glass is eight to ten times stronger than annealed glass. It is a good choice for the following applications:

  • Shower glass
  • Exterior table tops
  • Sliding patio doors
  • Shelving in a bathroom or any shelving that is required to hold weight

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass is two panes of glass laminated together with a layer of vinyl in between.  Laminated glass and should be used in applications where extra security and safety is required. It is typically used in the following applications:

  • Skylights and/or canopies
  • Commercial storefront doors
  • Windows located in a shower and above or beside a bath tub

Low E Glass

Low E Glass is a coating that can be added to sealed (double paned) units. It contains thermal properties that can help to keep your house cooler in the summer time and warmer in the winter months. It can also be very energy efficient. Keep in mind that there are different grades of Low E, and each one will have a slight tint to it. Low E Glass is typically found on:

  • Skylights
  • Sealed units that get a lot of sun

Please be advised that these are guidelines only. When safety glass is required, in many applications either lami or tempered glass may be acceptable. Please talk to the professionals at  Super Glass when trying to decide between lami and tempered glass as each application/job varies.
